From Monday until Tuesday I spent some time alone @ Ostend. I left at 10.10 and exactly at 16u my feet touched the water. If I believe my Google maps timeline which tracks my being, I drove over 4h which had to be like 2 and a half hours originally, but it seems correct because I had a lot of traffic and it was also in the papers that day that there was going to be a lot of traffic. I spent some time in the water and just enjoying the seaside by walking along the shore and the sea-dike. I ate something and I searched for a good compo for the fireworks that evening. I found a good spot and waited a little while.
Since I was alone and with a camera, people tend to open up to me and wanted to chat and were genially interested, which was nice. That’s a big advantage of traveling alone, you can easily meet new people since it’s easy for them to open up to just one stranger.
It was starting to get dark more early and a soon as the clock hit 22.30u, the fireworks started. That day, the 14th of August, DBK Fireworks was the organizer.
From all the fireworks I had seen till then, it was the biggest, but maybe not the nicest, which had more to do with the place I was standing I think. The whole sky, sea-dike and beach were lit up. It was a big disadvantage for my photos because I was not prepared for such a big fireworks and I was way too close for good photos. I missed the big booms and only got half of those on my screen, but hey, I really enjoyed it.
I had free parking but I had to walk half an hour back. I walked to the festival itself with my feet in the sand and the water but when I needed to go back I only went the last 500 meters back onto the beach. I love night walks along the shore, it’s so lovely to see all the little lights reflecting on the seawater and the beach. In Belgium, dogs are only allowed on the beach from 21u on, so there were doggies everywhere. Luckily I only had to drive for 20 minutes to my hotel.
I woke up way too early the next day because the breakfast was not even ready yet. I stayed at The family hotel Zuidwege in Zedelgem. It’s cheap, very clean and the owners are really nice. I was thinking about driving home right after breakfast because it was raining the whole morning but I checked the rain radar and it said that it was going to clear up so I drove back to Ostend and parked my car somewhere near the harbor. I took some nice picture and left Somewhere close in the afternoon.
